Why Ultragenyx Should Hire Me for the Summer of 2021

To start there are the generic reasons. I’m a third year PharmD candidate with hopes to pursue a fellowship or job in the pharmaceutical industry post graduation. I also meet every qualification required to apply for the summer position to make me part of the Medical Affairs Strategy Team.

But there are more important reasons that I’m going to get into which truly make me qualified to apply. I have been excited ever since one of my mentors, an MSL at Kiniksa, sent me this link earlier. I hope this informal article can show whoever ends up reading it from the Ultragenyx team how genuinely excited I am to have an opportunity to learn from those within the company over the course of summer 2021.

As I’ve been researching companies and fellowships recently two of the core things I have been requiring for places I would like to apply are:

  • An opportunity to learn about medical affairs within a relatively small / newer company.
  • A company that focuses on rare disease states, genetics, or oncology.

To me this position with Ultragenyx is a perfect fit. Now let me elaborate on why I am a perfect fit for Ultragenyx.

First and foremost I am a team player. I grew up playing sports and working in team atmospheres within the restaurant industry here in Portland, ME. I pride myself on having the ability to work productively with anyone I am paired with in any situation.

I have a diverse pharmacy background with experience in the hospital (inpatient), compounding and retail settings. I work in all these settings while pursuing my PharmD full time. By working multiple places with unique hours I can work the 30 hours a week I would like to during the school year, but also balance the hours around when I have exams and other commitments.

While my pharmacy experience has obviously helped my pharmacy knowledge the business I run separates me from my peers as the best candidate for your internship.

I operate an e-Commerce business through Amazon that focuses on arbitrage of small goods between major U.S. retailers. I am running this business 100% by myself. That means I am solving 100% of the problems, dealing with 100% of the customers and taking 100% responsibility of all positive and negative outcomes that occur.

My work style has to be flexible as I am running this business while also attending school full time and working. No two days are the same and I have to budget my time correctly whether it be between classes or late nights in order to keep everything organized. One order shipped incorrectly and Amazon can put my account on probation and even shut me down.

I will admit I thought I had meticulous attention to detail prior to starting this venture, I was wrong. That being said I believe that I do have it now. I also feel that the ability to manage something on my own day in and day out shows that I have the ability to consistently get the job done regardless of what problems I may have to solve.

Other things that I consider to be strengths of mine are my ability to communicate both verbally and in writing. I pride myself on my ability to public speak and also the versatility that I can write with. The public speaking comes naturally, but my writing is something I have spent a good amount of time working on and I am proud of the improvements I have made.

I just want to conclude by thanking the reader and once again mention that I hope my excitement comes across in this article and that I did a good enough job selling myself. I feel I can be a contributor to your team.
